Observations of lunar tides in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at Arctic and middle latitudes

چکیده
Meteor radars have been used to measure the horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere over Castle Eaton (52 N) in the UK and over Esrange (68 N) in Arctic Sweden. We consider a 16-year data set covering the interval 1988–2004 for the UK and a 6-year data set covering the interval 1999–2005 for the Arctic. The signature of the 12.42-h (M2) lunar tide has been identified at both locations. The lunar tide is observed to reach amplitudes as large as 11 ms−1. The Arctic radar has an interferometer and so allows investigation of the vertical structure of the lunar tide. At both locations the tide has maximum amplitudes in winter with a second autumnal maximum. The amplitude is found to increase with height over the 80–100 km height range observed. Vertical wavelengths are very variable, ranging from about 15 km in summer to more than 60 km in winter. Comparisons with the Vial and Forbes (1994) model reveals generally good agreement, except in the case of the summer vertical wavelengths which are observed to be significantly shorter than predicted.

متن کاملNonmigrating semidiurnal tide over the Arctic determined from TIMED Doppler Interferometer wind observations
[1] The TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) on the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite has been measuring horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) since 2002. Because of the high inclination of the TIMED orbit, TIDI measures the horizontal winds from pole to pole every orbit. This paper presents the first assessment of the spa...
متن کاملLunar tides in the Mesosphere over Ascension Island ( 8 ◦ S , 14 . 4 ◦ W )
A meteor radar has been used to measure the horizontal winds in the equatorial mesosphere and lower thermosphere over Ascension Island (8.0 • S, 14.4 • W). A 5-year data set covering the interval 2001–2005 over the height range 78–100 km is considered. The lunar M 2 tide is clearly evident in the data and reaches amplitudes as large as 11 ms −1 in the meridional component and 6 ms −1 in the zon...
متن کاملQuasi two day wave-related variability in the background dynamics and composition of the mesosphere/thermosphere and the ionosphere
Dissipating planetary waves in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region may cause changes in the background dynamics of that region, subsequently driving variability throughout the broader thermosphere/ionosphere system via mixing due to the induced circulation changes. We report the results of case studies examining the possibility of such coupling during the northern winter in the conte...
متن کاملA study into the effect of the diurnal tide on the structure of the background mesosphere and thermosphere using the new coupled middle atmosphere and thermosphere (CMAT) general circulation model
A new coupled middle atmosphere and thermosphere general circulation model has been developed, and some first results are presented. An investigation into the effects of the diurnal tide upon the mean composition, dynamics and energetics was carried out for equinox conditions. Previous studies have shown that tides deplete mean atomic oxygen in the upper mesosphere-lower thermosphere due to an ...
